  • Childbirth and Newborn PREPARATION Add-on Classes
Thurs., March 29, 2012 at the midwifery home and office of
Diana Sanders, CNM 9998 West 1350 North, Nappanee

    One Day — Two Classes
$50 for both classes or $30 for a single class

    Class 1 — 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. ~
    PELVIC HEALTH AND BABY POSITIONING
Did you know your birth experience can be greatly affected by how your baby lies in your pelvis? We’ll talk aboutthat during this class and talk about what you can do to work toward the ideal position for better birthing. We’ll learn a few exercises and positions that can help you before, during and after your birth. Elkhart chiropractor Mark Lindholm, DC, will give information and advice on spinal and pelvic health and to offer FREE CHIROPRACTIC EVALUATIONS for pregnant moms during the workshop. For those who want her to, Steph will offer amateur
    fetal position assessments.

    Class 2 — 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. ~
    BREASTFEEDING BASICS and NEWBORN CARE

You’d think breastfeeding would be easy, but it’s often tricky to get started right and is a nuanced skill for both you and your baby. We’ll talk about how your body makes milk, keys to successful nursing, troubleshooting and common challenges and, simply, HOW TO DO IT. A lactation consultant likely will be on hand to offer information and advice and to answer questions. We’ll also go over basic newborn behavior and some common how-tos like bathing, sleeping, belly-button care and how to assess the basic health of your newborn.

    About the teachers:
Stephanie Price is a childbirth educator, midwife’s assistant and nursing student. She’s also a breastfeeding mother and has had personal success with chiropractic care to help a breech baby turn and to assure optimal positioning for her most recent VBAC baby.

Mark Lindholm, DC, is a chiropractor at Natural Health Family Chiropractic in Elkhart. He serves newborn through adults, including pregnant women, and is highly knowledgeable about many health and wellness issues.

    Other Information:
The classes will be in the home and office of Diana Sanders, CNM, who is graciously opening her private space to us. Bring anything you might need for special comfort. Steph will bring light snacks for mid-morning and mid-afternoon and provide hot and cold drinks. Participants who come to both classes will have a 90-
minute break for lunch. You can pack a lunch, leave for lunch in Nappanee or enjoy a brisk walk over the break. While husbands are welcome, it’s likely mostly women will attend. Sisters, friends, mothers and doulas are welcome at no additional cost. These workshops are designed to COMPLEMENT, not replace, your childbirth prep classes.

    To sign up:
Send a short note with your NAME, ADDRESS, VM NUMBER, ESTIMATED DUE DATE and check payable to Stephanie Price to 71015 Kessington Road, Union, MI 49130. Call 574-333-4903 (Steph’s cell) with questions. (Leave a message if necessary; include your voice mail number for a returned call.) Remember, it’s $50 for both classes (includes morning and afternoon) or $30 if you only want to come for one of the classes.

Movie Screening

Birth Matters proudly presents a special screening of ...

MORE Business of Being Born
Explore Your Options: Doulas, Birth Centers & C-Sections

Friday, March 9, 2012
6:30pm - 9:30pm (doors open at 6pm)
Downtown Allen County Library Theater

This is episode #3 of MORE Business of Being Born, Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein's powerful follow-up to their landmark documentary, The Business of Being Born. In 2008, Birth Matters hosted a screening of that event, too, and we look forward to this one being just as successful and influential to our local birthing community!
Doors open at 6:00pm, show starts at 6:30pm. There are no reserved seats, so arrive early. The movie is just over 100 minutes long.

A panel discussion/Q&A will immediately follow the movie, and a wine and cheese reception will follow that.

If tickets do not sell out in advance, they'll be available at the door ($15.00/adult, $7.50/child), payable by cash or check. Due to limited seating capacity and space constraints, we recommend babies in arms.

Even though the documentary is not rated and does not officially require parental guidance, parents should be aware that it does contain mature content.
